  • Charting the Future: Canada's New Constitution
In 1982, Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau and Queen Elizabeth signed the historic documents that put Canada in charge of its own Constitution and enacted the Charter of Rights. It was an historic moment that continues to remind Canadians that Constitutional reform is an ongoing process. In these activities, students will have an opportunity to explore the history and relevance of Canada’s 1982 Constitution and Charter of Rights, prepare and present a political talk show about the patriation of the Constitution and the enactment of the Charter of Rights, create a timeline or prepare a list of key terms and concepts related to Canada’s constitutional history from the late 1960s to 1982, debate whether the patriation of the constitution and the enactment of the Charter of Rights have improved Canadian society, and prepare a profile of a major political figure involved in the process.
