  • Stranger than Fiction: The Bre-X Gold Scandal
It had all the elements of a great novel: a dramatic-rags-to riches story, a mysterious suicide (or was it murder?), and a scandalous international fraud. But the Bre-X saga was fact, not fiction, and thousands of investors were duped by the small Calgary-based mining company whose claims to have found gold in Indonesia proved to be false. In these activities, students summarize the events of the scandal, interview family or community members to explore investment options, explore and debate the advantages and disadvantages of corporate social responsibility versus increased government regulation, discuss how the media portrays corporations, and analyze and compare corporate codes of conduct of Canadian companies.
