A Sunday in 1967

It was a yearlong party in 1967 as Canadians celebrated 100 years of Confederation, and the CBC was there to toast the birthday.

The grids below don't correspond to a particular date but represent what you would hear and see on the CBC on a typical Sunday in 1967.

CBC Classics are those CBC programs that have remained in the Canadian memory due to their popularity, quality and sheer longevity.

The CBC in 1967

Canada turned 100 years old and Centennial programming dominated the airwaves in 1967. Programs such as 20/20 and Canada 100 were created to showcase Canadian history and culture, its people and places.

****

The CBC also covered many of the country's 6,000 Centennial events and built a $10-million International Broadcasting Centre (IBC) at Expo 67 in Montreal. The IBC meant foreign broadcasters could prepare radio and TV shows to send home, and was an Expo attraction in its own right with 5,000 visitors per day.

****

Even as we were proudly looking inward, much of the country's entertainment came from outside. Of the top 10 most-watched TV programs on the CBC that year, just three were Canadian: Front Page Challenge, Flashback and Don Messer's Jubilee. With that in mind, the Association of Canadian Television and Radio Artists (ACTRA) launched a campaign demanding more Canadian culture and ideas on Canadian television.
