"Montreal is generally known for its attractive women, but this year the situation has become ridiculous," says The World at Six host John O'Leary – and it seems most of the male journalists covering Expo 67 agree. They are incapable of taking their eyes off the mini-skirted "hostesses" - young women from 60 nations who act as guides to the various pavilions. In the spirit of international understanding, reporter John Sheltus takes it upon himself to ask the hostesses what they think of Canadian men.

• Expo 67 was the most spectacular of Canada's 100th anniversary celebrations. It was the Western Hemisphere's first official World's Fair since the International Bureau of Exhibitions was formed in 1928 (but there had been many unofficial World's Fairs).

• The star attractions at Expo 67 were the 113 pavilions. In addition to the national pavilions of the participating countries, there were theme pavilions with an academic and cultural tone, including Man the Explorer (science & exploration), Man the Creator (the arts), Man the Producer (resources and production) Man in the Community (the challenges of the urban environment), Man the Provider (agriculture). "Hostesses" acted as pavilion tour guides.

• According to the Expo 67 Official Guide, "Some 250 attractive hostesses and guides are available to welcome, direct and escort visitors. They wear smart and distinctive uniforms specially designed for Expo. In addition 30 male guides are on duty."

• Most hostesses spoke several languages. They received two weeks of training, including courses in "grooming and protocol."

• At one point the hostesses were asked not to wear "mini-mini-skirts" since they "distracted visiting journalists"!
