Beyond Green Gables: The Life of Lucy Maud Montgomery
Lucy Maud Montgomery (1874-1942) is one of Canada’s most famous and best-loved children’s authors. She created Anne Shirley, a character whose adventures begin in the classic novel Anne of Green Gables. Montgomery wanted to create a “book that would live.” She did that and more, with her works selling nearly 50 million copies worldwide. In these activities, students will gain insight into Montgomery by analyzing some of her quotations, write a diary entry modeled on Montgomery’s journals, plan a celebration to mark the 2008 100th anniversary of the publication Anne of Green Gables, examine and write a description of the fictional setting of Avonlea, and research and write an essay that compares one work by L.M. Montgomery and one by another classic children’s author.
