The friendship between Morley Callaghan and Ernest Hemingway was a legend itself. It began in the early twenties at the Toronto Star, where the two young reporters swapped short stories. When Hemingway moved to Paris he encouraged Callaghan to come along. That he did, and the pair continued their camaraderie in a summer that went down in literary history. Half a century later, Morley Callaghan reminisces about his old friend, two days after his death.

• Callaghan (pictured)wrote a memoir, That Summer in Paris (1963), about his adventures with Ernest Hemingway, F. Scott Fitzgerald and the artist Miro, among others.
• Ernest Hemingway died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound on July 2, 1961, in Idaho.
• Morley Callaghan died in Toronto in 1990, at 87.

• Thanks to Hemingway's vote of confidence, one of Callaghan's first short stories ended up in the Paris expatriate periodical This Quarter, along with the work of Joyce, Pound, Stein, Boyle and Hemingway himself.
• Some of Hemingway's most famous works include The Sun Also Rises, A Farewell to Arms, For Whom the Bell Tolls, and The Old Man and the Sea.

• Between 1926 and 1985, Callaghan published numerous novels and short stories. His first novel, Strange Fugitive was published in 1928. He also wrote Native Argosy (1929)and Such is My Beloved (1934). His later works include The Many Coloured Coat (1960), A Passion in Rome (1961), A Fine and Private Place (1975), A Time for Judas (1983), and Our Lady of the Snows (1985).
