Encouraged by the RCA, many ambitious Canadian artists - like their American and European Contemporaries - pursued studies in Paris which was then the centre of the art world. French training focussed on an extensive exploration of the human figure as well as a study of the great masters. In works by these Canadian artists, academic training adapted itself to subjects that frequently touched on educational, social and moral issues, reflecting changing realities in Canada. Sculpture, including portrait busts, legendary heroes, and romanticized views of indigenous peoples, integrated nationalist themes with a mastery of the human form.
