The Moffat family of Winnipeg is donating $100 million to the Winnipeg Foundation, which funds hundreds of local charities.
The family sold its media holdings last year for $700 million. It owned the Women's Television Network, Videon Cable, and Winnipeg's CKY TV, which were sold to Shaw Communications.
Spokesman Randy Moffat says the gift is the family's way of giving something back to the community that helped it achieve success.

"It's a sense that our family should invest some of the advantages back in the communities," he said. As for where the money will go, Moffat says he hopes it will mostly go to help needy children.
"Our family has always been distressed by the statistics that says that there are some 8 million Canadian children that live below the poverty line as defined by Statistics Canada, and wanted to make a gift of a size that would make a difference."
With the new money from the Moffat's, the Winnipeg Foundation says its capital has increased by almost 50 per cent.
