Handley names new N.W.T. cabinet

Last Updated: Thursday, October 26, 2006 | 5:35 PM CT

N.W.T. Premier Joe Handley shuffled his cabinet Thursday after losing Michael Miltenberger unexpectedly last week when he was kicked out for making threatening comments.

Nahendeh MLA Kevin Menicoche, chosen Monday to take Miltenberger's cabinet seat, did not inherit his portfolios, which included Health and Social Services as well as Environment and Natural Resources.

Instead Handley named Deputy Premier Floyd Roland as the new minister of health and social services while Michael McLeod will take over Environment and Natural Resources.

He put rookie cabinet minister Menicoche in charge of Transportation and the Public Utilities Board.

Handley added to his own responsibilities, taking over the Housing Corporation from Mackenzie Delta MLA David Krutko.

In exchange he gave Krutko the Workers' Compensation Board and Public Works and Services.

Following is the complete list of the new cabinet:

Joe Handley
Premier and minister of the executive
Minister responsible for Aboriginal affairs and intergovernmental relations
Minister responsible for the housing corporation

Floyd Roland

Minister responsible for the financial management board secretariat
