National Gallery of Canada - Musée des beaux-arts du Canada
Careful...I'm an Original
While visiting the National Gallery of Canada and the Canadian Museum of Contemporary Photography students have the opportunity to view and engage with original works of art. In order to ensure the safety of the works of arts (and students) there are specific rules that must be followed during your museum visit. We will review these rules with your students before the start of the program or workshop, however, please take time to review the rules prior to your class visit to the Gallery or CMCP. Knowing what behaviour is acceptable ahead of time will allow your students to enjoy their museum experience fully.
DO NOT TOUCH THE ART WORKS
Works of art, including photographs, are very fragile and we want to ensure that the collection is available for future generations. Students are encouraged to keep their hands by their sides or in their pockets to help avoid the temptation to touch the art works.
KEEP A SAFE DISTANCE FROM ALL ART WORKS
In order to avoid any damage to the works of art we recommend students stand at least one arm's length from the object. This includes all paintings, sculptures, photgraphs, and any other work of art students may see during their visit.
ALL SCULPTURES, BIG OR SMALL, OLD OR NEW, ARE FRAGILE. PLEASE DO NOT TOUCH THEM
Although sculptures may look solid, their surfaces are very fragile and should never be touched. This includes the pedestals and the glass display cases.
DON'T RUN OR PUSH IN THE GALLERIES
It is important to stay calm and walk in the gallery spaces. We want to avoid any possible accidents that could endanger the works of art.
DON'T RAISE YOUR VOICE OR YELL IN THE GALLERIES
Your group is not alone. There are often other school groups and people visiting. Museums are peaceful places to experience and admire works of art. Please speak at a normal level.
   STAY TOGETHER
As you travel through the galleries, remember to stay with your group. We don't want you to get lost! If you do, find a security guard. They will help you to re-locate your group.
   PENCILS ONLY
If you are planning to have your students write while they are visiting the galleries, please make sure they use pencils only. No pens are allowed in the gallery spaces.
   ENJOY YOURSELF!
Visiting an art gallery is a fun, interesting, relaxing, enriching, and educational experience. If you keep these basic rules in mind then everyone will have an enjoyable visit!
