2006 Registered Nurses Association of Ontario Award

Bariatric Surgery - reporter, Kellie Hudson

Kellie Hudson won the Ontario Regional 2006 Registered Nurses Association of Ontario Award for her story on morbidly obese patients. The documentary Bariatric Surgery was produced by Mike Bryan.

Kellie's documentary tells the story of two patients who tried all kinds of weight loss programs that didn't work. As a last resort they chose to undergo gastric bypass surgery. Worldwide, it's proven to be an effective treatment for the morbidly obese - people who are more than 100 pounds overweight. Kellie's story uncovered the fact that in Canada, patients are waiting up to seven years for this potentially life-saving operation.

Weighing the Balance
Produced by Kellie Hudson,
Dick Miller and Mike Bryan

Weighing the Balance evolved from a simple question: what happened to the men who were named and shamed in a very public news conference staged by the Toronto Police?

One of those men was James Lecraw. Despite the withdrawal of charges, LeCraw lost his job, friends and eventually, in deep despair, took his own life. This is James' story, as told by his brother and niece, his former employer and through his own words.

RTNDA/Unity Award:

Tom Grand

In June 2002 CBC Radio in Thunder Bay is singled out from among 85 large and small market radio and television stations across North America as one of just six winners of an RTNDA/UNITY Award. It's for news organizations that demonstrate an on going commitment and excellence in covering issues of race and diversity.

The award recognized strategies developed by staff and program manager Tom Grand to reflect the Northwestern Ontario's aboriginal population. These included the recruitment of aboriginal staff, and daily coverage of aboriginal stories.

CBC Thunder Bay was cited for its reports on the growing Aboriginal population and its impact on the community. The coverage paints a picture of both cultures grappling with the transition, and includes news items, documentaries, interviews, speeches and PSAs made by and about Aboriginal people. Here's a sampling of the stories.
