The principal of a St. John's school wants to know how three intruders — one allegedly a knife-carrying teen who threatened an off-duty police officer coaching at the school — got onto the premises.
Tom Bartlett said he is investigating the incident Wednesday evening, when a girls' volleyball team was practising in the gym of St. Paul's junior high school. A teen has been charged.
St. Paul's principal Tom Bartlett said the school is investigating how intruders gained access to the building Wednesday night.

"We talked to the girls and asked them how they felt about it, and they were unsettled. There's no doubt about it," Bartlett told CBC News.
After three teenagers gained access to the school, a knife was pulled on Doug Barrett, an off-duty officer and volunteer coach, Bartlett alleges.
Only one door in the school is used for access, and it is supposed to be locked at 4 p.m. each weekday.
"If there was a malfunction in the door — and sometimes that will happen, that the door doesn't close all the way — if that's it, well, obviously that's a simple one," Bartlett said.
Another option is that the door was not locked.
Before the incident, residents near St. Paul's — on Newfoundland Drive in the east end of St. John's — reported to the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary that young men in the area appeared intoxicated.
Stephen Coffin, 19, has been charged with uttering threats and assault with a weapon.
