BEAVER BANK, N.S. (CP) - A fire has destroyed a Halifax-area home that was the scene of a violent murder-suicide earlier this year.

Police don't know what caused the fire late Friday night in Beaver Bank, N.S., but say the blaze started in the basement.

Kerri-Lea Dixon, 12, was brutally murdered at the home in March by Daniel Webster Secord, who then took his own life.

Secord, a longtime family friend, had been accused of sexually touching three 11-year-old girls in 1994 but was never convicted.

It's not clear if anyone was living at the home before the fire, but neighbours say the home's destruction will help them move past a horrific event.

Lee Fisher tells CTV News that now she won't have a constant reminder of Kerri-Lea Dixon's death.

"It will be nice because you won't be remembering every time you drive by," said Fisher.

"Now a new memory can start and the old can finally be put to rest."
