Studio Sparks offers three hours of classical music, along
with the best in classic jazz, world and other musical styles, recorded
in Canada and around the world.
Hosted by Eric Friesen, and broadcast live from a storefront studio
looking onto the Sparks Street pedestrian mall in Ottawa, Studio
Sparks the ideal afternoon companion, providing music, conversation
and features to a national audience. Eric's friendly presence, and
wealth of knowledge and experience, animate the program and connect
to listeners in their day.
On a regular basis Eric welcomes a studio audience into the Studio
Sparks performance area for live music and interviews.

The Concerto According to Manny
-- an indepth look at the great piano concertos through the ears and fingers of celebrated pianist Emanuel Ax.
The series launches on Friday, October 13, and continues every Friday for 10 weeks.
In Episode one, Manny sets the stage for the series with a discussion of Mozart's piano concerto K.271.

Be part of the studio audience for a Studio Sparks session with virtuoso ukulele player James Hill. James pushes the boundaries of this humble instrument way beyond the "plunk-a-plunk" image it has often had. He's at the vanguard of a worldwide movement that's taking the ukulele to places it's never been before. For this session on Studio Sparks, he'll be joined by cellist Ann Davison.

 THE 2006 CHAMBER MUSIC MURDER MYSTERY CONTEST WINNER ANNOUNCED!
We challenged our listeners to write the opening to a murder mystery that involves chamber music. Little did we know that Studio Sparks listeners are closet mystery writers! We received more than 100 entries. We read the best on the air, with the help of actors Megan Follows and Albert Schultz of Soulpepper Theatre Company.
Our panel of judges: Eric Friesen, Peter Robinson and Julian Armour discuss the contest entries live on Studio Sparks.
On May 25 we invited Julian Armour, artistic and executive director of the Ottawa International Chamber Music Festival, and Peter Robinson, author of the acclaimed Inspector Banks mystery novels, to help us choose a winner.
And the winner is ....
Susan Henderson of Victoria B.C. for her entry "The Cellist Dies Tonight". Susan wins a trip for two to this summer' s Ottawa International Chamber Music Festival, including 4 nights at the Westin Hotel in Ottawa. In addition, her entry will be turned into a story and inspire a new composition by Canada's legendary composer Eldon Rathburn. This will be performed live at this summer's Ottawa International Chamber Music Festival on July 31st at 8:00 pm as part of the 90th birthday celebrations of Eldon Rathburn.
Four runners up each win a package of Studio Sparks and OICMF prizes, including CDs, packed in a Studio Sparks bag. The runners up are H.C. Grant of Fredericton, NB; Kate Watson of Dartmouth, NS; Peter Ferris of White Rock, BC; and Helen Heller of Toronto, ON.
