Hear here!
It was in 1994 that the CBC announced the debut season of the concert
series OnStage at Glenn Gould Studio.
Here we are in our 13th season with a line-up that reflects the excellence
and diverse musical offerings that audiences have come to expect. Thirteen
unique events have been prepared, and while some details and guests will
be announced subsequently, we are pleased to “raise the periscope”
on the 2006-2007 season. Glenn Gould Studio has become a destination for
a wide array of artists from all genres. OnStage has led the
way with musical events that you’d be hard pressed to find elsewhere.
Whether your taste is for the classics, opera, jazz, world or contemporary
music, OnStage has something to offer.
The Canadian Opera Company Orchestra celebrated a milestone this year
with the opening of the Four Seasons Centre for the Performing Arts, but
they will make a welcome return visit to Glenn Gould Studio in April of
2007 for the 13th OnStage/COC Gala.
The vocalists being showcased will be soprano Joni Henson, tenor Joseph
Kaiser and bass Robert Gleadow.
A milestone of a very different sort is marked in November. We
Shall Be Released - A Celebration of the Last Waltz will be a unique
celebration of the 30th anniversary of The Last Waltz, the performance
and subsequent concert film that celebrated the legacy of the seminal
Canadian pop group The Band. OnStage gathers together an all-star
band, anchored by Blackie and the Rodeo Kings (Colin Linden, Tom Wilson
and Stephen Fearing) that will pay tribute to the music of The Band and
the artists that shared the stage with them back in 1976. At the same
time they will showcase a new generation of Canadian artists.
In early December, The Dave McMurdo Jazz Orchestra will convene in Glenn
Gould Studio to play Nimmons ‘n
More, and guitarist/vocalist Celso Machado leads us down Brazilian
Pathways with a world-beating team of collaborators that includes
pianist David Virelles and bassist Rich Brown. Also this season, in February,
we’ll showcase the sensational young pianist Laila
Biali - at 25 she’s already double award winner (as composer
and keyboardist) at the 2005 National Jazz Awards. Guitarist Michael Occhipinti
will explore his Sicilian roots along with New York-based singer/dancer/percussionist
Allesandra Belloni in Canzoni del
Sud. Speaking of roots, those wishing to celebrate Burns Day will
want to take in Scots, Wha Hae,
when OnStage will bring together Larry Beckwith’s innovative
ensemble Toronto Masque Theatre, soprano Meredith Hall and the Stratford-based
Celtic group Shaggy Haggis.
Ranging from Celtic to Classical to Jazz and beyond, there are No Strings
Attached to the range of music played by harpists Sharlene Wallace, Lori
Gemmell and Monika Stadler and friends in February. A favourite of Canadian
audiences, we welcome Gavin Bryars as he makes a long overdue return to
Glenn Gould Studio with some friends for Oi
mi lasso. Also in March, Harry
Manx demonstrates why he’s been called an "essential link"
between the music of East and West, while Eine
Kleine Mozart pairs pianist Janina Fialkowska with the Chamber Players
of Canada for Mozart’s own pocket-sized arrangements of two favourite
piano concertos. Colin McPhee’s Balinese Ceremonial Music will be
heard when the piano duo team of Marcel and Elizabeth Bergmann collaborates
with the Evergreen Club Contemporary Gamelan in New
Sounds / Ancient Cultures.
My fellow producers and I sincerely hope you’ll explore the musical
landscape that we’ve mapped out for the 2006-2007 season. We encourage
you to experience the intimacy of Glenn Gould Studio as you make new discoveries
and welcome familiar favourites, OnStage.
