MOSCOW (CP) - Canada finished fifth in the combo event and fifth overall at the FINA World Trophy synchronized swimming competition Sunday.

The U.S finished first in the combo with the favoured Russians finishing second, Spain third and Japan fourth.

Still, the Russian team finished first overall. Spain was second, Japan third and the U.S. fourth.

"We are extremely pleased with the team's performance," Canadian head coach Isabelle Taillon said. "The team and combo swims were excellent. I think the team will gain a lot of confidence from their performances at this event.

"Strategically we felt it was very important for us to be at this event. We felt we were noticed and things went well for the team."

Teams were given scores for artistic impression by three judges from different continents.

Taillon said that the smaller panel's willingness to take risks with the marks worked in Canada's favour.

"We were given a 9.7 in the combo," said Taillon. "The U.S. was given a 9.9 and the Russian's received a 9.4. That's quite stunning. It seemed the judges were really willing to reward teams for their artistic elements."
