Jean Toche Correspondence, Art Metropole Collection: Finding Aid

Jean Toche (1932-) was involved in New York's radical political art scene from the 1960s on and was associated with the New York Destructive Art movement, the Artist Workers' Coalition and the Guerrilla Art Action Group (1969-1976; co-founded with Jon Hendricks). These groups expressed public consciousness through happenings, written manifestos, publications, and mail art.

Scope and Contents of the Collection

The collection consists of 69 works written by Jean Toche, many of the works are written in a hybrid style comprised of fictional characters and story lines together with commentary relating to current socio-political events and issues. The correspondence addresses such issues as American patriotism, the Gulf War, the erosion of free speech, the national health care system, the treatment of the poor, and the Rodney King trial.

Administrative Information

Custodial History

The collection was donated to Art Metropole by Printed Matter, New York, to whom the majority of the correspondence is addressed. One of the first artist-run centres in Canada, Art Metropole is part of the international network of parallel galleries committed to conceptual art. The art work (artists' books, audio tapes, videotapes, and multiples) produced and documentation about this movement was collected, catalogued, and preserved by Art Metropole, exhibited there, loaned for exhibition to other organizations, and made available to researchers. The Art Metropole Collection, including the Jean Toche Correspondence, was donated to the National Gallery of Canada Library and Archives by Jay A. Smith, Toronto, 1999.
