Biographical Sketch

Ray Johnson (1927-1995) is formally credited with fathering "mail art" as an autonomous genre through his creation of the New York Correspondence School (later The Buddha University, The Asparagus Club, and the Taoist Pop Art School) a network of artists with whom he exchanged, forwarded, and directed art, chosen objects, and collaborative projects through the mail, and with whom he organized associated meetings, performances, and events. Johnson's personal mail art network extended into Canada following his participation in Concrete Poetry an exhibition organized by the Fine Art Gallery, the University of British Columbia in 1969.
