![]() Siegfried Haase fonds:Finding Aid
Biographical SketchSiegfried Fritz Haase (1916-1984), Canadian
painter and print maker, was born in Germany and, after immigrating to
North America, lived in Herring Cove, Halifax (1952-1984). Haase worked
as an engraver and lithographer for the Maritime Photo Engravers,
an affiliate of the Halifax Herald. In 1964, he joined the staff
of the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design, becoming Associate Professor
of Design (1964-1982). Exhibitions of Haase's work were held at Mount Saint
Vincent University (1968), Spryfield Festival of Arts (1971), St. Mary's
University (1972) and the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia (1994). Examples of
his work are held in the Nova Scotia Art Bank and the Art Gallery of Nova
Scotia.

Scope and Contents of the CollectionThe fonds consists of trade cards and certificates
in Siegfried Haase's name from the Amalgamated Lithographers of America
and the International Photo-Engravers' Union of North America
and relate to his employment at the Maritime Photo Engravers. The
fonds also consists of professional correspondence and invoices received
by Siegfried Haase from various persons and institutions over the course
of his career in Canada. There are also photographs of the artist at various
stages in his career, photographs of his works and various negatives.

Immediate source of acquisition: Donated to the National Gallery of Canada by the artist's daughter, Ingrid Haase, 1985.
