Biographical Sketch

Dr. James M. MacCallum (1860-1943), oculist, Professor of Opthalmology (University of Toronto), was a friend and patron of Canadian artist Tom Thomson (1877-1917) and other members of the Canadian artist group, the Group of Seven. Following the drowning death of Tom Thomson at Canoe Lake in 1917, MacCallum took a personal interest both in the artist's estate and in his posthumous reputation. Throughout his lifetime, MacCallum corresponded with the members of the Group of Seven.

Scope and Contents of the Collection

The collection consists of correspondence received by Dr. MacCallum from Tom Thomson and Group of Seven members Lawren S. Harris (1885-1970), Alexander Young Jackson (1882-1974), Francis Hans Johnston (1888-1949), Arthur Lismer (1885-1969), and Frederick Horsman Varley (1881-1969), as well as correspondence between MacCallum and various members of the Thomson family, individuals and companies related to the death of Tom Thomson and the settling of his estate. There is also an Insurance Policy Certificate for Tom Thomson and 2 telegrams related to the search for Tom Thomson's body. In addition, the collection includes a handwritten I.O.U. from Albert Curtis Williamson (1887-1944).

Immediate source of acquisition: Donated to the National Gallery of Canada through the intermediary, A.Y Jackson, by Dr. James M. MacCallum, 1944.
