Book Publishing Industry Development Program - BPIDP

The objective of the Book Publishing Industry Development Program (BPIDP) is to ensure choice of and access to books written by Canadian authors that reflect Canada's cultural diversity and linguistic duality both in Canada and abroad. BPIDP seeks to achieve this objective by fostering a strong and viable Canadian book industry that publishes and promotes Canadian authored books.

Eligibility Criteria

This program applies to:

  • Canadian book publishers;
  • Canadian book distributors and wholesalers;
  • Associations, organizations, agencies or companies representing one or more sectors of the book trade.

Publishers applying to the Program must qualify under specific definitions for book publishing, Canadian ownership, eligible titles, and eligible sales. Program definitions and application forms can be found on the Canadian Heritage Web site.

Summary

The Book Publishing Industry Development Program provides financial assistance through four funding initiatives:

  • Aid to Publishers, deadline:May 1, 2006
    The principal objective of the Aid to Publishers component is to ensure the ongoing production and marketing of Canadian-authored books. Applicants must be 75% Canadian-owned and -controlled publishers who have been in business for at least 36 months and whose principal activity is book publishing.

  • Aid to Industry and Associations, deadline: No specific date
    The Aid to Industry and Associations component helps the Canadian book industry build the skills and tools necessary to ensure its ongoing strength, viability and capacity to invest in the development and promotion of Canadian books and authors. There are five categories of projects in this component: marketing and promotion, professional development, industry research, business planning, and publishing internships.

  • Support for the Canadian Book Industry Supply Chain Initiative, deadline: No specific date
    Through this component, BPIDP seeks to encourage the industry's participation in the strengthening and modernization of the supply chain for books in Canada by facilitating the adoption of technologies and practices related to supply chain management.

  • International Marketing Assistance
    Publishers receiving funding from Aid to Publishers may also be eligible for additional support for their export sales, including funding, promotional and logistical assistance, and market intelligence. This component is administered by the Association for the Export of Canadian Books - AECB. You may visit th AECB's Web site.
