External Research Program

Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC)

Last Verified: 2005-11-07

CMHC's External Research Program (ERP) offers funding assistance up to $25,000 to help Canadian researchers carry out research investigations on topics related to housing.

Eligibility Criteria

Independent researchers may apply, as well as those employed in:

  • Canadian universities;
  • private consulting firms;
  • the professions;
  • the housing industry.

Applicants must be Canadian citizens or have permanent resident status in Canada. Full-time students at the graduate or undergraduate level are not eligible to apply. If applications are submitted by full-time government employees, applicants and team members must conduct their research as private consultants.

Applications must be sent to CMHC's National Office either by post or e-mail by midnight October 31.

Eligible Area

All Canadian provinces.

Eligible Activities

The objective of the program is to encourage and enable researchers in the private and non-profit sectors to put forward and carry out relevant, innovative and high quality housing research.

Summary

ERP grants recipients are selected on the basis of the merit and significance of their proposals by a national external committee of housing experts. Committee representatives include experienced researchers and practitioners in government, academic institutions, housing related professions and businesses.

A research report is the expected end product of research supported through the Program. Once the research is completed, it will be available through the Canadian Housing Information Centre.

How to Apply

Guidelines and applications forms are available on CMHC's Web site from approximately July to October.
