Administrative, consultative and technical support is provided by the Arts Branch.

Eligibility Criteria

The Alberta Foundation for the Arts, a beneficiary of lottery funds, provides grants to artists and organizations in the visual, performing and literary arts, and cultural industries.

Summary

The Alberta Foundation for the Arts was established in 1991 with a mandate to support and contribute to the development of arts in Alberta. It replaced the Alberta Art Foundation, the Alberta Foundation for the Performing Arts, the Alberta Foundation for the Literary Arts and the arts and cultural industries grant programs of Alberta Culture and Multiculturalism.

The Foundation is guided by the following objectives in the Alberta Foundation for the Arts Act (1991):

  • to support and contribute to the development of literary, performing, visual and media arts in Alberta;
  • to provide both individuals and organizations with opportunities to participate in the arts in Alberta;
  • to promote the enjoyment of works of art by Alberta artists;
  • to oversee the collection, preservation and display of works of art by Alberta artists; and
  • to encourage artists living in Alberta in their work.

The grant programs of the AFA serve every region of the province, help to enhance the economic and social status of the province, and contribute significantly to Albertans' quality of life. Categories of AFA support include Arts Festivals, Theatre & Dance, Publishing & Sound Recording, Touring, Film & Video, Visual Arts, Music, Literary Arts, Children and Youth. The Foundation also co-sponsors five annual summer schools.
