ExportUSA, offered by International Trade Canada (ITCan), consists of three programs:

  • New Exporters to Border States Program (NEBS) is a key export education tool offered by trade offices in the U.S. that targets Canadian companies not yet exporting to the United States. NEBS provides companies with vital practical orientation by introducing them to the essentials of exporting as well as by giving them first-hand exposure to markets located in U.S. border states;
  • Exporters to the United States program (EXTUS) is a program similar to NEBS that serves Canadian companies already exporting to the U.S. border states. Formerly known as NEBS Plus, EXTUS focuses on expanding the markets of successful Canadian exporters to other regions of the United States; and
  • Reverse NEBS is a program that serves Canadian companies not yet exporting to the United States by providing informative seminars in Canada on the essentials of exporting.

Eligibility Criteria

NEBS - Canadian companies incorporated and operating in Canada, interested in exporting to the U.S. but not yet doing so on a regular basis.

EXTUS - Canadian companies currently exporting to the U.S. with sales of less than CAN$2.3 million.

Reverse NEBS - All Canadian companies interested in becoming exporters to the U.S.A participation fee may be charged.

Canadian companies who wish to participate in any ExportUSA mission or seminar must agree to be entered into an ITCan's database, the Virtual Trade Commissioner, a commercial confidential database of Canadian exporters and their capabilities.

Summary

Both the NEBS and EXTUS programs consist of training sessions, or "missions", that are often planned around trade shows to give participants an in-depth look at a specific business sector. Each NEBS or EXTUS mission differs in terms of its size and structure, depending on the location in which they are held (i.e. which province and Canadian consular office is involved in its organization), and on the industry sectors that interest its participants. Nevertheless, all NEBS and EXTUS missions last from one to three days and include a briefing on exporting and export services/programs available in Canada. In most cases, travel to the Canadian Consulate General in the target market will be part of the mission. Once at the target Canadian office, participants can also take advantage of most or all of the following components:

  • a briefing on border procedures;
  • presentations by U.S. manufacturers' representatives, sales agents, distributors, and/or buyers;
  • a tour of a relevant trade show and/or visits to local wholesales or retailers;
  • briefings on local U.S. markets;
  • meetings with Canadian Trade Officers and potential agents or distributors;
  • receipt of export information guides and kits.

The Reverse NEBS Program brings U.S. export information to companies in cities throughout Canada. These occasional one-day seminars are usually focussed on a specific sector or issue and feature one or more key export contacts from the target U.S. territory.

Program Costs

For both NEBS and EXTUS, a non-refundable fee of US$100 applies to each company representative participating in a mission. This fee is payable to the Canadian Consulate hosting the mission.

The Canadian Government may cover a maximum of CAN$100 towards the cost of an entry fee for one registered company representative to a trade show that forms a part of the mission. This will be determined on a case-by-case basis. All other costs, such as accommodations, transportation, and personal expenses are the responsibility of the participant.
