Directory of Aboriginal Exporters 2002

TABLE OF CONTENTS

Introduction

The Roadmap to Exporting

Directory of Aboriginal Exporters

The Aboriginal Business Development (AIBD) Committee* is pleased to provide this, the Second Edition of the Directory of Aboriginal small- and medium-sized enterprises that are either active exporters or export-ready. The first edition of the directory was released in 1999 with a listing of 218 companies. The second edition contains 470 firms.

WIN Exports (World Information Network for Exports)

All Canadian companies who are exporting or who have the capacity to export can register in WIN Exports, the Trade Commissioners' electronic database of exporters. WIN can be accessed only by Trade Commissioners around the world, Team Canada Inc partners and International Trade Centres across Canada. WIN is used to match Canadian firms with international business opportunities and to assist foreign buyers to source products and services from Canada. All registrants to WIN Exports receive the CanadExport newsletter, published bi-monthly, with articles on trade issues and export opportunities. To register in WIN Exports visit: http://www.infoexport.gc.ca/ie-en/login.jsp.

Roadmap to Exporting

This directory includes an excerpt from the Roadmap to Exporting, developed by Team Canada Inc. The Roadmap is designed to help new and experienced exporters find their way to Canada's best sources of export services.

To order your own free copy and CD-ROM, call Team Canada Inc's toll-free Export Line at 1-888 811-1119. The Roadmap to Exporting is also available online at exportsource.ca.

Export Development Canada

Export Development Canada (EDC), a member of the AIBD Committee, is pleased to provide financial support for the printing of this directory. EDC is devoted exclusively to providing trade finance services to support Canadian exporters and investors in some 200 markets worldwide. Nearly 90 per cent of our customers are smaller companies for which we have developed programs to service their particular needs. Accounts Receivable Insurance, for example, has been used by Aboriginal people -- even those with a company located on a reserve -- to increase their working capital while reducing the risk that they will not get paid by their buyers. To learn more about EDC's Accounts Receivable Insurance for your business, call 1-888-332-4593.

SUCCESS STORY

Iroquois Water Ltd.
Akwesasne, Ontario
http://www.iroquoiswater.com/

Iroquois Water Ltd. is a Native-owned company, headquartered on Cornwall Island within the Territory of Akwesasne in Ontario. Created in 1999 to market natural spring water from one of North America's largest aquifers, Iroquois today boasts the world's most advanced water bottling facility on Native land.

Iroquois provides water, technical know-how and quality assurance to native communities across Canada and the USA. From 1999 to 2000, the company's staff quadrupled to 45 people, mostly due to its sales in American markets. "We are excited to have joint venture agreements enabling nation to nation trade," says CEO Dan Villeneuve.

Villeneuve encourages novice exporters to take advantage of Federal Government agencies as facilitators. "You don't have to do it on your own," he stresses. "The Government can provide tools to save you time and money. For example, we have used resources of the Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade (DFAIT), Industry Canada and Aboriginal Business Canada (ABC) to help educate ourselves, and for assistance in attending trade shows." The company also plans to contact the Trade Commissioner Service in order to facilitate its growth in the US and around the world.

"We've been busy building our factory over the past two years and look forward to the challenges ahead," adds Villeneuve.

SUCCESS STORY

Northern Lights/Kitsaki Meats Limited Partnership
La Ronge, Saskatchewan
www.kitsaki.com

Northern Lights -- a brand name of Kitsaki Meats Limited Partnership, wholly owned by The Lac La Ronge Indian Band -- is the world`s largest grower of organic wild rice. The company employs 25 people full time and another 25 seasonal workers during harvest periods. Northern Lights has been exporting wild rice for just over a year and markets 99 percent of its crop in the USA, Germany and the Netherlands. It also produces beef jerky for the Canadian market and for export to Japan.

For more than 25 years, the band had been growing wild rice and selling it to brokers and traders for distribution worldwide. However, as wild rice was transformed from a specialty crop to a commodity, the price was constantly decreasing. In order to improve margins for the producer, the band looked to one of it's own companies, Kitsaki Meats -- an experienced exporter -- to market its wild rice. With the help of an international marketing firm in Saskatoon, a business plan was developed to ensure a successful entry into the European and US markets.

"Since we stopped using brokers and cut out the middlemen, our wild rice exports have become much more profitable," says Terry Helary, General Manager of Northern Lights, who has a few other tips for new exporters. "Hiring the expertise of a marketing consultant and participating in international trade shows are both well worth the investment. It's important to get out there and be seen. For example, we handed out our brochures at recent shows in Germany, the U.K., California and Washington to dealers who later referred clients our way. Above all, be patient. It takes time to establish customers in other countries."

Kitsaki Meats Limited Partnership received a Canada Export Award for Aboriginal Business Achievement in September 2001.

Mahemigew Inc.
Lennox Island, Prince Edward Island
www.mahemigew.pe.ca

Mahemigew Inc., based in Prince Edward Island, has been harvesting, packaging and selling its peat moss to nurseries and greenhouses since 1981. The company, which is owned by the Lennox Island Band, employs two people full-time; however, its payroll expands to 30, mostly aboriginals, during the harvest season.

Mahemigew has been exporting since its inception. Today it can hardly meet the demand for its products in Japan, where it sells 95 per cent of its production. "Our screening process ensures fine quality peat moss which the Japanese have a hard time finding anywhere else," says Don Bernard, the company's General Manager. Mahemigew, which used Aboriginal Business Canada (ABC) to help finance its equipment, was exporting for a while to New England as well. "We found the competition in the US too fierce but we hope to start selling there again and to explore markets in other countries."

According to Bernard, there are opportunities out there for other Canadian suppliers of quality peat moss. "The market is tight in the US," he adds, "but not necessarily in other parts of the world."

SUCCESS STORY

Ahnisnabae Art
Thunder Bay, Ontario
www.ahnisnabae-art.com

Ahnisnabae Art is owned and operated by native artist Roy Thomas and his wife. Formed in 1995 to showcase his work through native art products that illustrate and support the Ahnisnabae culture, the company today also sells silkscreen prints, reproductions and art cards.

Ahnisnabae Art has found a good market for its reproductions in France. According to Thomas, art connoisseurs there share many of the issues - such as concerns for the environment and family - that are expressed in these works through text and images.

Outside Canada, Thomas' art is exhibited in museum collections in Germany where he has participated in group shows as well as in the USA and the Netherlands. He is currently writing an autobiography which he hopes will boost the company's sales to other countries.

SUCCESS STORY

Dorothy Grant Ltd.
Vancouver, British Columbia
www.dorothygrant.com

Long before her star would rise as an internationally-acclaimed fashion designer, Dorothy Grant was first and foremost, a great Haida artist. Her garments, ceremonial button blankets, spruce root baskets and hats can be found in museums and private collections throughout the United States, Western Europe and the Far East.

Her seven-year-old company of eight people was exporting on a small scale south of the border, when Dorothy first visited Japan as a member of the Team Canada 1999 trade mission. She knew there was a market in that region for her elegant Haida art form garments, since a Japanese business man happened by her store in Vancouver and, very impressed, bought many items which he quickly sold on his return home. He later became Dorothy's agent. It was clear that her unique, wearable art, which links ancient heritage to modern society, had found a niche in Japanese culture.

The high-profile trade mission presented the ideal opportunity for Dorothy's small company to make a big impression in a promising new market. With the help of her agent, she held fruitful discussions with magazine editors, fashion designers and manufacturers, enabling her to gain a solid foothold in Japan.

Dorothy's advice to new exporters: "Do your homework, research the market, spend time there, have an export plan, and understand the social and business culture of the country you are targeting."

SUCCESS STORY

E2 Environmental Alliance Inc.
Calgary, Alberta
www.e2canada.com

E2 Environmental Alliance Inc. provides consulting and training services worldwide. Established in 1998 by five partners, E2 has completed projects in more than 25 countries on five continents, ranging from the provision of expert advisors to large integrated projects, often in conjunction with local counterparts.

As part of a World Bank initiative, E2 created and delivered a training and capacity-development program to 35 Indigenous representatives from various regions of Bolivia. This program helped them understand the environmental and social impacts of the rapid development of hydrocarbon resources, and the potential for rural electrification in their communities. Five of the participants went to Calgary to accelerate their learning and on their return to Bolivia, delivered their own training courses under the supervision of E2 specialists.

With assistance from the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA) and the Canadian Consulate General in La Paz, E2 Environmental Alliance Inc. located appropriate offices and organizations - as well as a partnership with the Indian Resource Council of Canada - and helped prepare the Bolivian Indigenous people to benefit from the growth in their country's energy sector.

In 1995, a profitable business initiative was undertaken to fund the humanitarian work of the Four Worlds International Institute. This community-based, sustainable economic enterprise is called Four Directions International. Guided by holistic principles, processes and values shared over the years by the wise Elders and teachers of many tribes and nations, Four Directions International is dedicated to healing the human family and mother earth.

SUCCESS STORY

Four Worlds International Institute/Four Directions International
Lethbridge Alberta
Http://Home.uleth.ca/~4worlds

Four Directions International was created in 1995 to fund the non-profit humanitarian work of the Four Worlds International Institute. Throughout its 18-year history, Four Worlds International Institute has developed projects and programs for Indigenous communities in North America and worldwide, including Thailand, Ukraine, Bolivia, Dominica, Mexico and Papua-New Guinea. An internationally-recognized leader in education and training, health promotion and development and environmental issues, Four Worlds International has roots going back 30 years when its founder, Phil Lane Jr., began working at the grass-roots level with Indigenous peoples around the world.

Four Directions has a North America-wide distribution system in place through its partnership with U.S.A.-based Lotus Light Inc., a joint venture with Canadian information technology company Syntec, and a distribution agreement with the U.S. environmental technology firm PolleyTech Corporation. The Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade (DFAIT) has supported the work of Four Worlds, particularly in Mexico, where Embassy officials continue to facilitate implementation of Four World's trade agreement with the Otomi, representing more than 100,000 Indigenous people. The agreement points to investment and profit-making opportunities for Canadian Aboriginal businesses and communities, including the production and export of organic coffee and herbal medicines for re-export, the distribution of environmental and information technologies, and the provision of technical assistance in sustainable forestry practices.

SUCCESS STORY

R.L. Resource Management Ltd.
Whitehorse, Yukon

Since its establishment in 1988, R.L. Resource Management has completed various projects throughout Northern Canada and Alaska. The firm specializes in project development and facilitation services for communities, governments and private agencies. Projects have ranged from facilitation of social and economic programs in remote communities, to the development of a historic waterfront, to the provision of administrative services to First Nation communities.

As a result of its participation in the Team Canada 1999 mission to Japan, R.L. Resource Management is making significant inroads in that country. That was the consulting firm's first trip to Japan, but it was the second time the company benefitted from participating in a Team Canada mission. "We also made many valuable contacts in Latin America during the 1998 mission, including a number of government agencies that were introduced to us by two Chilean companies," says Partner Rachael Lewis.

According to Ms. Lewis, both trips proved to be first-rate educational experiences as well as profitable investments in the future. "By developing connections with other Canadian delegates," she says, "our company gained new ideas and strategies as well as access to numerous opportunities, the benefits of which will continue for some time. The support of our Government is crucial in securing our trade relationships."

Torngait Ujaganniavingit, established in 1991 and Inuit owned, sells granite blocks throughout Western Europe and Taiwan. These unique granite blocks weigh up to 25 tonnes, are grey with blue/green Labradorite crystals scattered throughout.

SUCCESS STORY

Torngait Ujaganniavingit Corporation (TUC)
Goose Bay, Labrador

In Ten Mile Bay, the most northerly community on the Labrador coast, a small quarrying company can barely keep up with the demand in Europe for its beautiful, unique stone.

Torngait Ujaganniavingit Corporation (TUC), a subsidiary of the Labrador Inuit Development Corporation (LIDC), has been mining anorthosite since 1992 near the community of Nain, where it employs on average 60 people, mostly Inuits. Marketed under the trade names "Reflect Blue" and "Blue Eyes", the attractive stone is netting premium prices in sophisticated markets in Italy, France, Germany and Switzerland.

When TUC started looking for a partner to help market its products in 1991, the company was contacted by an Italian firm who came over to take a look at the Labradorite granite. After a piece was shipped to Italy, where it was sliced and polished, the Italians were very impressed. Today, TUC owns 50 percent of an Italian marketing firm which sells 100 percent of the company's production throughout Europe -- literally as soon as it is cut out off the mountain. "Europeans, especially Italians, know a lot about stone and appreciate the quality of ours," says Henry Lyall, Manager of TUC. "The demand exceeds supply."

TUC's exporting activities are an important source of local jobs and training opportunities, which corresponds to LIDC's mandate to help improve the living conditions of the Inuit of Labrador. Another quarry is being developed at Igiak Bay as well as a plant at Hopedale, where waste rock will be cut into strips and slabs for export. Production at both facilities is expected to begin in the near future. "We are continually expanding," adds Lyall. "More and more mining crews are being trained and we have another five or six potential new sites to develop."

The initial financing of the equipment for the quarry originated from the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency (ACOA), which contributed approximately 50 percent of the cost. Assistance was also provided by Enterprise Newfoundland and Labrador, the Canadian Aboriginal Business Development Program, and Natural Resources Canada.

ACR data loggers measure, record, and download temperature, relative humidity, AC and DC current, pulse frequency, voltage, air and water pressure, flow, wind speed and RPMs. Each product line uses specially prepared software to download stored information to a personal computer for easy access to spreadsheet and graphics presentations.

SUCCESS STORY

ACR Systems Inc.
Surrey, British Columbia
www.acrsystems.com

When he founded ACR Systems in 1983, Albert C. Rock, an entrepreneur of Métis Cree heritage, was a high-tech explorer -- always looking for new and better ways to do things. ACR data loggers grew out of his search for an improved method of recording temperature and relative humidity in heating, ventilation, and air-conditioning (HVAC) systems. Today, the Surrey-based company is a multi-million dollar business, manufacturing pocket-sized data loggers that circle the globe -- literally. Its products are used on unmanned orbiters and, on the ground, in over 100 countries, in an ever-increasing range of applications from heating systems and blood temperature monitoring, to Formula One racing cars. They can be found in a watershed study in the Himalayas, a nuclear power plant in North Carolina, a Colombian rose farm, in the Smithsonian Institution, Windsor Castle, and the J. Paul Getty Museum. Closer to home, the Royal British Columbia Museum is currently using ACR data loggers to monitor the temperature of the "Yukon Ice Man".

ACR's overall sales has a strong international component. More than 80 percent of its production and staff of 30 people are involved in exporting, mainly to the United States, but also to the European Union, the Middle East and the Far East. In expanding its presence abroad, ACR attends major trade shows around the world, including AHR Expo, ISA Expo, Anuga FoodTech and Sensors Expo, which present excellent opportunities to make contacts with end users and potential distributors. The company has also availed itself of Federal Government programs, such as financial assistance in developing its multi-lingual presentation material and Trade Commissioner Services (TCS). "TCS has carried out initial research for us in various countries, helping to validate potential agents," explains Roger Mansel, ACR's Marketing Communications Director. The company is still expanding its dealer network, currently present on five continents.

Mansel has the following advice for smaller companies looking to expand their international scope: "Take advantage of the many government services available. For example, along with the Trade Commissioner Services (TCS) we have found Industry Canada's Strategis www.strategis.gc.ca site, and CanadExport, published by the Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade, are particularly useful in helping us to keep an eye on what's going on out there."

Nuytco Research Ltd.
Vancouver, British Columbia
www.nuytco.com

Nuytco Research Ltd. specializes in undersea technology. The Vancouver-based company of eight full-time employees designs, builds, and operates atmospheric diving suits, submersibles, remotely operated vehicles and specialty equipment for commercial diving. Nuytco, which exports worldwide, supplied the camera platform used to film Titanic and the submersibles featured in The Abyss.

Dubbed the "sports car of submersibles", Nuytco's patented DeepWorker was originally designed for undersea engineers, but the two-seat version has also found a niche among professional and recreational divers. Nuytco's impressive international achievements have included the sale of a submarine rescue system to the Royal Australian Navy and atmospheric diving suits to the navies of half a dozen countries. The company has provided DeepWorkers to the American Deepwater Engineering Association in Hawaii, to an American tourist operator and to a firm in Korea. It is currently involved in a long term contract with the National Geographic Society, which is leasing two DeepWorkers as vehicles to explore the U.S. National Marine Sanctuaries. Nuytco was hired by the United Space Alliance, a NASA contractor, to recover booster rockets offshore Cape Canaveral, using DeepWorker. The operations were successful and the company hopes to have an order from the NASA group in the near future.

Dr. Phil Nuytten, president and founder of Nuytco Research Ltd., was the recipient of the 2000 Lowell Thomas Award, for unique and distinct work in exploration, by the Explorers Club of New York.

SUCCESS STORY

Asham Curling Supplies Ltd.
Winnipeg, Manitoba
www.asham.com

In 1978, Métis entrepreneur Arnold Asham introduced the revolutionary Red Brick Slider to the world of curling, which is slipped onto one foot in order to easily slide down the sheet of ice. Since then, Asham Curling Supplies Ltd. has grown from a one-man, home-based business to a factory employing twelve people in Winnipeg, manufacturing and distributing curling shoes and accessories worldwide.

Asham Curling Supplies Ltd. embarked on its international activities in 1985. Today, the ISO 9003-certified company sells its products in the United States, Europe and Japan through a network of distributors and agents.

Over the past five years, the company's sales have risen dramatically, due in part to its exports. "If you are in a position to start exporting, go for it," says Asham, who was one of the founders of the World Curling Tour. He adds that the most effective means of promotion is word of mouth. "Canadian curlers participating in the World Championships use our products and that leads to queries from dealers in other countries. We do considerable business through e-commerce, so maintaining a corporate Web site has also been a key element in our success."

SUCCESS STORY

Eyeball Networks Inc.
Vancouver, B.C.
www.eyeball.com

When Chris Piché founded Eyeball.com Network Inc. in 1996 to provide software development support in the Vancouver area, he did not envisage going international. But just a year later his small company completed its first export sale. "We had an advanced technology and there was a company in Hong Kong that was interested, so it was a natural fit," says Piché. "When we started the business, we didn't think about geography. It just so happened that initial demand was in Hong Kong."

Today Eyeball.com is an award-winning world leader in interactive video communication technologies and services, whose flagship product, Eyeball Chat, enables users to communicate live, face-to-face. With an average annual revenue growth of 355 percent, the company was ranked the number six Canadian Shooting Star in Deloitte & Touche's prestigious Canadian Technology Fast 50 Program. Chairman and CEO Chris Piché was voted one of Canada's Top Young Leaders by the Globe and Mail, and "Top 40 Under 40" by Business in Vancouver, a provincial business newspaper. He was also recognized by Profit Magazine as the youngest CEO to lead a Canadian Hot Start Up.

The company has partnered with Dr. Stanley Ho, a billionaire in China, to launch a broadband entertainment site -- DrHo.com -- a real-time, interactive casino that combines 3D animation with real dealer and player interaction. Eyeball.com is now looking to enter the U.S. market through partnering agreements. "We look forward to further growth as the Internet communication market presents increased global opportunities for us," says Piché.

SUCCESS STORY

Taybridge.communications
Taymouth, New Brunswick
www.taybridge.com

David Lewis, a full-status Mohawk, originally formed taybridge.communications in 1992 to provide local desktop publishing and writing services. Today his rural New-Brunswick company delivers a myriad of on-line services, including web site development, computer-based training, project management services and on-line software support -- all to clients in the USA.

According to Lewis, his first international project -- to provide on-line technical support for trial users of California-based Net Objects' software -- fell into his lap. "I was offered the contract after working for a number of years as a volunteer with their support groups," he explains.

Although he has not aggressively sought out exporting business, Lewis has advice for other small companies looking to expand beyond Canada: "Network, network, network." He stresses the importance of taking the time to develop long-term relationships. "And once they're developed, you have to deliver. It's that simple. Be competitive price-wise, but find your niche and excel at it." Taybridge has an international reputation.

"All of my projects thus far have come via work of mouth," says Lewis. "I've built my client base by providing top-level service and always trying to deliver more than expected."
