Dallas, TX (Sports Network) - Brenden Morrow scored a goal and added an
assist, to lead Dallas past the New Jersey Devils, 3-1, in the home opener for
the Stars at American Airlines Center.
Eric Lindros netted his first goal with Dallas after signing with the club as
a free agent in the offseason.
Marty Turco finished with 19 saves for the Stars, who have won their last five
home openers.
Travis Zajac's first goal in the NHL was the lone tally for the Devils, who
shut out the Carolina Hurricanes, 4-0, on Friday in their first game of the
season.
Martin Brodeur allowed three goals on 31 shots in the loss.
The Stars drew first blood as Niklas Hagman netted a short-handed goal at the
11:48 mark of the first period. After breaking up a play in the neutral zone,
Stu Barnes moved the puck to Philippe Boucher at the New Jersey blueline and
he passed the puck in front to Hagman, who beat Brodeur high, stick side.
Dallas went up 2-0 at the 4:44 mark of the middle session on Morrow's first
goal of the season. From behind the net, Mike Ribeiro slid the puck out to
Morrow in the slot and his one-timer sailed into the right corner of the
cage.
New Jersey got on the board and made it 2-1 at 8:33 of the second on Zajac's
goal. From the left-half wall, Sergei Brylin centered the puck in front to
Zajac, who backhanded the disc over Turco's glove and into the net for the
power-play goal.
Midway through the final frame, Turco was penalized for interference, but the
Devils could not capitalize with the man advantage.
With around six minutes left in the contest, Zach Parise had a great chance
down low at the right side of the net that Turco stopped with a glove save to
keep Dallas in front.
Lindros put the game away for Dallas scoring from in front with 2:48 left in
the contest. Morrow made a nifty backhand pass from the right side of the net
to Lindros in front and he chipped the puck over a sprawled out Brodeur to
make it 3-1.
