Ottawa, ON (Sports Network) - Jarome Iginla scored the lone goal of the game
in the third period and Miikka Kiprusoff stopped all 33 shots he faced as
Calgary edged Ottawa, 1-0.
Iginla's goal was his second for the Flames, who have split their first four
games this season.
Ottawa goaltender Ray Emery made 27 saves as the Senators lost their third
game in a row after winning their season opener.
After a scoreless first period that saw few scoring chances, Calgary and
Ottawa had several great chances to score in the second period, but Kiprusoff
and Emery came up with timely saves to keep the game scoreless.
The Flames, though, finally broke through in the final period.
Kristian Huselius collected the puck along the right boards and skated into
the slot before attempting a slap shot that was deflected off target. However,
much to the delight of Calgary, the puck skipped right to Iginla, who fired
into an open net with 8:35 left to play in regulation.
"I was fortunate that as (Huselius) shot, I was right in front and i was able
to keep on it," said Iginla. "I was fortunate to stop and slide it by
(Emery)."
The Senators then had a chance to even the score with back-to-back power
plays, and pulled Emery on their second man-advantage to create a 6-on-4.
However, Kiprusoff and the Flames held on for the victory.
"It's no secret, the guy on the other end is a great goalie," said Emery. "For
us, the difference was that we had scoring chances and some odd man rushes,
but we couldn't beat them. They got kind of a funny goal at the end and that
was the back-breaker in the game."
