Edmonton, AB (Sports Network) - Dwayne Roloson turned aside 19 shots for his
first shutout of the season to lead the Edmonton Oilers to a 4-0 victory over
the Washington Capitals at Rexall Place.
Ryan Smyth and Joffrey Lupul each had a goal and an assist for the Oilers, who
stopped a two-game slide.
Brent Johnson made 24 saves for the Capitals, who have dropped two straight
and four of their last five games.
The Oilers grabbed a 1-0 lead in the first when Smyth uncorked a slap shot
from the left circle that squeaked under the right corner post for his sixth
goal of the year at the 11:31 mark.
Roloson was not very busy in the opening period as he only faced three shots
in the frame.
Washington put pressure on Edmonton in the second period and outshot them,
9-7, but Roloson turned aside all the shots he faced.
Roloson got some help when a shot by Brian Pothier banged off the left post
with less than two minutes to play in the frame.
Edmonton got some insurance in the third when a left-point shot by Smyth
bounced off of Marc-Andre Bergeron, popped into the slot and Fernando Pisani
banged it in for his second goal of the season 5:40 into the period.
The Oilers sealed the win when Lupul's power-play goal on a rebound shot made
it a 3-0 game with 3:24 to play.
An empty-net goal with 1:05 to play by Marty Reasoner accounted for the final
score.
