Ottawa, ON (Sports Network) - Antoine Vermette and Dean McAmmond each scored
two goals as Ottawa used a five-goal second period to rout New Jersey, 8-1.
Jason Spezza finished with a goal and two assists and Ray Emery made 34 saves
for the Senators, who had lost four of their last five games coming into the
game.
Martin Brodeur suffered one of the worst outings of his career with the
Devils, yielding six goals on 26 shots before he was yanked late in the second
period.
Brian Gionta scored the lone goal for New Jersey, which has dropped three of
its last four games. Scott Clemmensen took over for Brodeur and gave up two
goals on 12 shots.
Holding a 2-1 lead after the first period, the Senators exploded for five
goals in the second period to grab an insurmountable lead.
Vermette netted his first goal of the period to give Ottawa a two-goal
advantage 7:36 into the period. Then, just 50 seconds later, Joe Corvo scored
to make it 4-1.
Tom Preissing scored with 6:35 left in the period, and, 32 seconds later,
Vermette scored his second goal and that was all for Brodeur.
McAmmond's goal with 57 seconds left in the period made it 7-1. His second
goal 4:41 into the final period capped the scoring.
Spezza got things going for Ottawa when he netted a power-play goal 9:06 into
the opening period. Gionta briefly evened the contest, but Dany Heatley scored
with 3:55 left in the first to make it 2-1.
