(Sports Network) - The Minnesota Wild aim to set a franchise record for
victories in a single month when the red-hot club visits the Colorado
Avalanche in a Northwest Division matchup from the Pepsi Center.
At 9-1, the Wild have already established the best start in their six-year
history. Minnesota has won nine games during a month one time previously, in
March of 2003.
The team extended its current win streak to three games with a 3-2 shootout
decision over Anaheim on Friday. Mikko Koivu netted the lone goal during the
shootout session, while Manny Fernandez made 32 saves in regulation and
stopped all three skaters in the deciding phase.
Nick Schultz and Brian Rolston each had regulation goals for the Wild, who
avenged a 2-1 defeat to the Ducks on October 20 and improved to 7-0 at home on
the young season.
Fernandez currently leads all NHL netminders with a 1.57 goals against
average, while Minnesota has killed off 32 consecutive opposing power plays as
a team.
The Avalanche, who will close out a three-game homestand tonight, was a 5-3
loser to Washington in their most recent outing on Wednesday. Andrew Brunette
recorded two goals and an assist in the setback.
Colorado captain Joe Sakic scored once and assisted on another goal to eclipse
the 1,500 point barrier for his career. The veteran center is the 11th player
in league history to achieve the milestone.
Marek Svatos added a career-best three helpers for the Avs, who have dropped
two of their last three contests.
Colorado, which will next visit Columbus on Wednesday, has also lost three of
its last four at the Pepsi Center and is just 2-3-1 at home for the year.
The Wild dealt the Avalanche a 3-2 overtime loss in Minnesota on October 5 and
has won three straight in the series. Colorado, however, took five of the
eight meetings between the rivals last season and went 3-1 against the Wild at
the Pepsi Center in 2005-06.
