Environmental Youth Corp. (EYC) and EYC International

The Environmental Youth Corp. (EYC) is designed to create a six to twelve month window-of-opportunity for post-secondary graduates under the age of 30. These individuals are either unemployed or underemployed and are seeking to gain experience in either a national or international environmental project.

Matching youth with growing Canadian organizations, ECO Canada (previously the Canadian Council for Human Resources in the Environment Industry or CCHREI) not only supplies companies with a database of hundreds of pre-screened, work-ready young professionals, they also supply a wage subsidy of up to $12 000 (depending on the length and type of project your company is undertaking).

Eligibility Criteria

National and International Program

Host Organization must:

  • be Canadian owned or a Canadian subsidiary;
  • offer a full-time position for the duration of the program;
  • offer a new position that has a significant environmental component;
  • not access another federally funded wage subsidy for this position.

Young professional must:

  • be under the age of 30 and Canadian citizen or landed immigrant;
  • be a graduate of a post secondary institution (i.e. College, University, Technical school);
  • be eligible for full-time employment (i.e. not returning to school);
  • be underemployed or unemployed;
  • have not previously participated in a Federal youth employment/education program (previous participants of summer employment programs are still eligible);
  • not be employed with the employer;
  • not be a family member of the organization's directors or senior officers;
  • have the intention to obtain a permanent position in the environment industry.

Summary

Environmental Youth Corp. (EYC) is funded under the Youth Employment Strategy program. Both Employers and Interns need to apply for the program to get approval from ECO Canada. Funding will be allotted on a first come first serve basis.

International Environmental Youth Corp.

In the job description, be sure to include all international components the position may have. Final eligibility for the International EYC program will be determined by ECO Canada based on the job description submitted.

The following are some examples of international components in environmental employment:

  • international travel including international conferences and trade shows (USA is considered international);
  • global significant issues. For example, global warming, greenhouse gas emissions, cross-boarder migratory species, endangered species etc;
  • development, maintenance, and support of international markets;
  • liaison with international organizations or clients;
  • international partnerships;
  • sharing of information across international boarders (e.g., international publications).

Funding

  • International EYC Program maximum funding: 40% of wages with a ceiling of $12 000;
  • National EYC Program maximum funding: 33% of wages with a ceiling of $8 000;
  • Internship duration minimum of 6 months and a maximum of 12 months.

Funding: allocation normally starts in April of each year and is allocated on a first come first serve basis. However, funding can be available at any time. Please visit eco.ca to check the status of funding availability.
