1. Trade Team Newfoundland and Labrador (TTNL)

TTNL is one of 12 regional trade networks, collectively known as Team Canada Inc. There are four key areas of focus in assisting Newfoundland and Labrador companies to achieve success in the global market:

Department of Innovation, Trade and Rural Development (INTRD)
One of the Department's core business lines is Trade and Investment. This division specializes in assisting Newfoundland and Labrador businesses develop an export plan to enter new markets, find new export business partners and research new national and international market opportunities. Targeted business/industry trade shows and trade missions form an important part of the mandate. Export Development Canada (EDC)
EDC offers a range of financial services to help Canadian exporters meet buyer's need for longer repayment terms.  By working with the EDC, and including financing options with their export proposals, smaller companies can compete against the financing proposals offered by larger competitors.  EDC helps exporters compete in more than 200 countries, including higher-risk and emerging markets.  For example:

  • With buyer financing, EDC lends money to the foreign buyer, but pays the Canadian exporter directly, right here in Canada. EDC assumes the repayment risk.
  • EDC lines of credit with foreign financial institutions offer the foreign buyer quick and easy access to financing at a familiar bank and in the buyer's own language.
  • If a Canadian exporter gets paid for an export sale by a promissory note, EDC has a note purchase program that turns the deal into a cash sale.

Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA)
The Exporters section of the CBSA web site will help you to understand the reporting requirements that must be fulfilled in order to meet your obligations under the Customs Act. The Agency also assists other government departments (OGDs) in the administration of their legislation, as it relates to the exportation of various commodities. Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA)
The CFIA, which reports to the Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada, delivers inspection programs related to food, plants and animals.  Their role is to enforce the food safety and nutritional quality standards established by Health Canada and, for animal health and plant protection, to set standards and carry out enforcement and inspection.

Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA)
CIDA's mandate is to support sustainable development in developing countries in order to reduce poverty and contribute to a more secure, equitable, and prosperous world. The Agency's work is concentrated in the poorest countries in Africa, Asia, and Latin America. CIDA also supports democratic development and economic liberalization in Eastern Europe and the former Soviet Union and supports international efforts to reduce threats to international and Canadian security.

International Chamber of Commerce (ICC)
ICC introduced the first version of Incoterms in 1936. Incoterms (short for International Commercial Terms) make it easier for traders in different countries to understand one another. These standard trade definitions that are most commonly used in international contracts.

Canadian Chamber of Commerce
The ATA Carnet is an international, unified customs document, which under a series of Customs Conventions, simplifies customs procedures for the temporary duty free admission of three main categories of goods traded internationally:

  • commercial samples;
  • goods for presentation or use at trade fairs, shows, exhibitions or similar events;
  • professional equipment.

Essentially the carnet is a merchandise passport that facilitates travel with goods, into foreign countries, making travelling abroad easy and hassle-free. The ATA Carnet can be used for unlimited entries and exits from foreign countries and Canada for up to one year.  Since 1972, the Canadian Chamber of Commerce has been authorized to issue carnets in Canada.

Forum for International Trade Training (FITT)
FITT is the only organization in Canada to accredit a professional designation to international trade practitioners - the C.I.T.P. MUN - Centre for International Business Studies (CIBS)
(CIBS) was established at Memorial University of Newfoundland's Faculty of Business Administration in June,1994.
