Student Connections (SC) offers a series of services aimed at helping small and medium enterprises (SMEs) better understand how e-business and e-commerce can benefit their daily business activities. From planning, promoting, and updating a Web site, to incorporating electronic payment processes into on-line activities, SMEs can learn the elements of a successful and marketable e-presence. E-Commerce First Step provides practical, cost-effective e-commerce training designed to meet the specific needs of each business client.

Eligibility Criteria

E-Commerce First Step is aimed at small and medium enterprises.

Summary

All E-Commerce First Step services are presented in a user-friendly manner by trained and certified Student Business Advisors who will visit a business client's office and conduct a one-on-one information session on a specific topic of interest. Services available include:

  • The E-Business Blueprint - general overview of e-commerce capabilities
  • Web Site Planning - how to build an effective web site
  • Web Site Evaluation - recommendations for better results
  • On-Line Promotion - tips on increasing web site traffic
  • Selling on the Internet - the electronic payment process
  • Internet Security - in-depth look at viruses, browser settings, cookies and encryption/decryption  
  • Distributing E-Newsletters - how to create and distribute this highly effective marketing tool
  • On-Line Research for Business - strategies and tools for effective Internet research

All First Step services also include a written report, workbook or action plan that can be used as a reference tool by the business owners.
       
E-commerce First Step is delivered through SC's Administrative Centres across the country. College and university students, primarily from business and technology programs, are trained, tested and certified to deliver these valuable services. Since 1996 SC has employed more than 5 800 Student Business Advisors who have provided valuable IT training to more than 175 000 clients across Canada.

E-Business Awareness Presentations

SC has created comprehensive presentations on a variety of electronic commerce topics. (Note: see the document Student Connections ). These one-hour presentations are offered to business and community groups, in an effort to provide them with valuable information on e-business and how to take advantage of the new technologies that are revolutionizing the marketplace.
