1. WAGE SUBSIDY PROGRAMS

Career Focus Program - Human Resources and Skills Development Canada

The Career Focus program constitutes one of the three components of the Youth Employment Strategy. Through this program, employers/sponsors may hire recent graduates and receive a wage subsidy of up to a third of the participants's salary ($15 000 maximum).

Co-operative Employment Program -Nova Scotia Economic Development

The Co-operative Employment Program is a wage subsidy program available to government funded organizations, municipal governments and non-profit organizations.  Eligible employers must hire a student from an approved co-opertive education program.

Community Cultural Workshops - Nova Scotia Department of Tourism, Heritage and Culture

The Cultural Affairs Section provides financial assistance towards community cultural workshops and consultations to assist the development of knowledge and skills of people active in arts, crafts, and heritage activities at the community level.  Eligible applicants are non-profit organizations registered with the Nova Scotia Registry of Joint Stock Companies.

Employment Incentives Program - Nova Scotia Workers' Compensation Board

The Employment Incentives Program (EIP) is a program that offers financial as well as technical assistance to employers who are able to provide workers/employees, who have been injured on the job, a chance to re-enter the workforce.

Energy Training Program for Students - Nova Scotia Petroleum Directorate

The Energy Training Program for Students is a wage subsidy initiative for small and medium-sized private sector companies directly involved in the energy sector, which offers employment to post-secondary students and graduates.

First Nations and Inuit Summer Student Career Placement Program - Indian and Northern Affairs Canada

This program will support opportunities for career-related work experience and training to in-school First Nations and Inuit youth living on a reserve or in recognized communities during the summer months.

The overall purpose is to assist students in preparing for their future entry into the labour market. The program provides for wage contributions for employers to create jobs for Inuit and First Nations students at the secondary and post-secondary levels.

First Nations and Inuit Youth Work Experience Program - Indian and Northern Affairs

The program will fund proposals from First Nations and Inuit governments and organizations to provide supervised work experience for out-of-school, unemployed, or underemployed youths (aged 15-30) in community service, community businesses or other work experience that will contribute to their employability in an enriching and fulfilling way.

International Business Internships- Dalhousie University

This program assists companies in exploring new markets around the world.  Business activities can include:
research product demand, government regulations, demographics, and cultural differences;

  • identify potential customers, agents, distributors, joining venture partners;
  • investigate competitors and their products;
  • obtain information about bidding opportunities and upcoming events;
  • assist with a company representative's visit to the market; and
  • identify new technology to buy or improve your international competitiveness.

Nova Scotia Conservation Corps Regular Summer Program
 - Nova Scotia Department of Environment and Labour

The Nova Scotia Youth Conservation Corps Regular Summer Program (NSYCC) provides financial assistance towards community-based environmental projects across Nova Scotia, which gives young people between the ages of 17 to 24 an opportunity to receive training and work in the community on environmental conservation and enhancement projects.

On-the-Job-Training - Workers' Compensation Board of Canada

On-the-Job Training is a wage subsidy program provided by the Nova Scotia Workers' Compensation Board.  The On-the-Job (OJT) Program offers assistance to all employers interested in training workers who have been injured on the job.   Employers must provide valuable one-on-one training and experience to the employee selected.

Provincial Summer Employment Program (PEP) - Nova Scotia Economic Development

Provincial Summer Employment Programs (PEP) offer several wage subsidy programs to employers of full-time students (college/university students or high school graduates going to college).   Non-profit organizations, government funded organizations and municipal governments are eligible to apply.  Private sector businesses are not eligible for this program.

Science and Technology Internship Program with SMEs - National Research Council Canada  (NRC)

This program provides financial assistance to small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) who want to hire technology/business graduates. Interns will work on technology-related projects such as new product introduction, multi-media tools, and market analysis and development.

Seed Capital ConneXion Program for Young Entrepreneurs - Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency

The Seed Capital ConneXion Program for Young Entrepreneurs effectively responds to the needs of entrepreneurs by helping them access small business start-up and expansion financing of up to $15 000, while providing them with sound business counselling and training.  Also available is up to $2,000 for specialized training and business counselling.

Summer Work Experience Program - Human Resources and Skills Development Canada

The Summer Work Experience program is an initiative of Youth Employment Strategy. The program helps employers/sponsors by providing them with wage subsidies if they hire secondary and post-secondary students for the summer in a career-related job. There are special provisions for employers who hire students with disabilities.

Targeted Wage Subsidy Program - Human Resources and Skills Development Canada

This program provides employers with a subsidy of wages and other costs to hire workers.   An Agreement is made with an employer, whereby HRSDC contributes toward the costs incurred by the employer in hiring one or more workers.

TEAM Work Opportunity Fund for Persons with Disabilities - Human Resources and Skills Development Canada

The Opportunity fund supports a broad array of employment activities for persons with disabilities who are not eligible for employment benefits under the Employment Insurance Act.  The objective of the Opportunity Fund is to assist unemployed persons with disabilities to prepare for, obtain and keep employment.

Youth Internship Canada (YIC) - Human Resources and Skills Development Canada

Youth Internship Canada (YIC) helps young people make effective transitions from school to work.   The program funds projects that provide young people with the employability skills and practical work experience with an employer that will help them get a job.

2.  GOVERNMENT TRAINING PROGRAMS

Atlantic Investment Partnership (AIP) - Entrepreneurship and Business Skills Development - Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency (ACOA)

The Entrepreneurship and Business Skills Development (EBSD) component of the AIP will respond to the challenges facing the Atlantic Canadian economy by providing more entrepreneurial opportunities and services for young people and women, by helping small business owners and their staff acquire the latest in business and technological skills, and by helping to provide career opportunities for youth within the region.  The EBSD includes three key elements:

Innovation Skills Development Initiative
The purpose of the ISDI is to help SMEs incorporate enhanced innovation management and technical skills into their firms in order to make them more productive and globally competitive.

Women in Business Initiative
The purpose of the Women in Business Initiative is improved growth and competitiveness of women-owned businesses and their greater representation in Atlantic Canada's emerging growth sectors.

Young Entrepreneur Development Initiative
The objective of YEDI is to create jobs and wealth in Atlantic Canada by enabling more young entrepreneurs to start and grow businesses.   More specifically, it will provide more young Atlantic Canadians with opportunities to develop the attitudes and business skills needed to identify business opportunities and successfully launch and grow a business.

Student Connections (SC) hires and trains post secondary students to provide Canadian businesses with customized training on how they can use today's technologies to their business advantage. Services include Internet training, e-commerce awareness and assistance.

Self-Employment Program - Human Resources and Skills Development Canada

The Self-Employment Assistance Program provides income support, training, and technical assistance to qualified Employment Insurance (EI) claimants to enable them to become self-employed.  (Participation in the program is subject to the availability of resources at the local level).

Skills Link Program- Human Resources and Skills Development Canada

Skills Link helps youth facing barriers to employment develop the broad  range of skills, knowledge and work experience they need to participate in the job market.  The Skills Link Program constitutes a component of the Youth Employment Strategy. Human Resources Centres of Canada (HRCC) - Human Resources and Skills Development Canada (HRSDC)

HRSDC operates Human Resource Centres of Canada across the country to help meet the various employment needs of Canadians.   The HRSDC is the main point of delivery for HRSDC's employment programs and services, and the Employment Insurance Program.

Labour Program - Human Resources and Skills Development Canada (HRSDC)

The Labour Program promotes and enforces employer and employee compliance with Part III of the Canada Labour Code (Labour Standards) and the Fair Wages and Hours of Labour Act (Fair Wages).   Service through local and regional offices include inspections, investigations of complaints and unjust dismissals; client education; and provision of information material.

Labour Standards Division  - Nova Scotia Department of Environment and Labour

The Labour Standards Division deals with such issues as:  protecting employees, employment records, vacation and vacation pay, holiday pay, equal pay for equal work, leave of absences (pregnancy, parental, bereavement, and court); hours of labour, employment of children, minimum wage, and advance notice of termination of employment (employee and/or employer).

Occupational Health & Safety Division - Nova Scotia Department of Environment and Labour

The Occupational Health & Safety Division (OH&S) concentrates its efforts on safe and healthy workplaces, work practices and safety standards protecting the working public.  The OH&S Division conducts inquiries under the Occupational Health & Safety Act when an employee has refused unsafe work and was disciplined as a result or was discriminated against because of action taken pursuant to the Occupational Health & Safety Act.

Record of Employment (ROE) - Human Resources and Skills Development Canada (HRSDC)

The Employment Insurance Act and its regulations require every employer to complete a Record of Employment when an employee stops working.   This is considered an interruption of earnings.   This happens when the employment ends, or an employee leaves because of pregnancy, injury, illness, adoption leave, layoff, leave without pay, or dismissal.

Social Insurance Number (SIN) - Human Resources and Skills Development Canada (HRSDC)

A Social Insurance Number (SIN) is a unique nine digit number assigned to an individual and used in the administration of various programs, namely,  Employment Insurance and the Canada Pension Plan.  Employers who want to remit income tax deductions and premiums based on an employee's income must ensure that the employee produces a SIN card within three days after being hired.

Trust Accounts Division- Canada Revenue Agency (CRA)

The Trust Accounts division works to ensure that employers and workers meet the withholding, remitting and reporting requirements of the Income Tax Act, The Canada Pension Plan and the Employment Insurance Act.  It also ensures they meet the requirements for provincial tax withheld at source, for all provinces except Quebec.
