Surplus Government Assets for Non-Profit Organizations

Surplus Crown property becomes available whenever government departments, agencies, boards or commissions declare their property surplus to their requirements. At this time, these surplus assets may be provided at nominal or no cost to an eligible non-profit organization.

Eligibility Criteria

Registered non-profit organizations or a recognized non-profit organization may apply for the acquisition of surplus furniture or equipment. Non-registered groups must either register or seek the sponsorship from a registered not-for-profit organization. This information will be verified prior to any equipment transfer taking place.

Summary

Applications for surplus goods are received on a first come first served basis. If the goods are not available, the application will be retained for a period of three months, then returned to the organization. The financial limit for any one organization is $5,000 in a government fiscal year, as per regulations to the Surplus Crown Property Disposal Act.

The disposal of Surplus Crown property is subject to the Surplus Crown Property Disposal Act and Regulations. This Act and its Regulations may be viewed or downloaded at the following Internet addresses: Surplus Crown Property Disposal Act

Surplus Crown Property may generally be divided into two categories :

1. Surplus goods : Furniture and equipment or computer equipment. Because of the specialized nature of computer equipment and existing arrangements, the majority of computer equipment is recycled back into the public school system via the "Computers for Schools Program". see the document Canada's Computers for Schools Program

2. Surplus Land and Buildings : Disposal of surplus land and buildings is normally done by public tender or some other form of public solicitation of bids. Land and buildings are not normally available to non-profit groups, except in unusual circumstances where there is a clear benefit to the local community and the transfer of property can be carried out in accordance with the Surplus Crown Property Disposal Act.
