Canada responds to the current crisis in East Timor
2006-06-16
Since the sacking of more than one third of the national army in April 2006, the situation in East Timor has deteriorated rapidly and significantly, a situation exacerbated by ethnic tensions. As many as 100,000 people, or one tenth of the total population, have been displaced.
On June 12, 2006, the United Nations launched a flash appeal for USD$18.8 million, with a focus on protection, water and sanitation, health and shelter.
Canada is providing $1 million dollars in response to this crisis. This includes:
- $350,000 to the International Committee of the Red Cross for water and sanitation, non-food items such as tarpaulins and hygiene kits, family reunification and detention visits;
- $150,000 to the United Nations Children’s Fund for water and sanitation;
- $100,000 to the Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs for support to assistance coordination; and
- $200,000 to CARE Canada for basic needs and overall transportation and logistics.
- $200,000 to the World Food Programme for emergency food assistance.
