Program Description
The Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA) encourages Canadian non-profit organizations to share their innovative knowledge and programs with developing countries. Through its Innovation Fund, CIDA supports:
- projects that demonstrate sustainable innovation; and
- projects that transfer a proven innovation to another developing country.
The Innovation Fund focusses on five sector priorities that have been singled out as key development areas, with gender being a cross-cutting theme:
- basic education;
- governance;
- health;
- environmental sustainability; and
- private sector development.
Eligible Canadian non-governmental organizations (NGOs), environmental non-governmental organizations (ENGOs), and membership and specialized organizations (MSOs) can:
- submit proposals for projects of up to two years duration at any time;
- receive funding only for one project from this Fund; and
- submit joint proposals.
The Innovation Fund provides funding up to:
- 66.6 percent of the total Canadian contribution to a maximum of $200,000 for projects submitted by NGOs, ENGOs, and MSOs.

All organizations must be deemed eligible before submitting a project proposal. For previous partners, check that your eligibility is up to date. For first-time applicants, please submit an eligibility form: NGO and ENGO Eligibility Form and MSO Eligibility Form.
Project proposals must respect the matching requirements.

Assessment Criteria
All proposals will be evaluated for their innovative character, sustainability, impact, and value for money.
Application Process
1. Confirm your organization eligibility:
a. For previous partners, check that your eligibility is up to date.
b. For first-time applicants, please submit an eligibility form.
2. Once your organization's eligibility is confirmed, you are welcome to submit a proposal. Please refer to the Guidelines NGOs/ENGOs/New organizations and the Guidelines Membership and Specialized Organizations for full application information.
Proposals:
- should be a maximum of 15 pages and include all of the information and forms described in the Guidelines;
- can be submitted at any time; and
- will be processed on a first-come, first-served basis until the Fund has been completely allocated.
