The list of tasks—visas, immunizations, tickets, insurance, finalizing the details of your actual assignment—seems endless and possibly at times overwhelming. However, we have gathered together tips, information and required forms that will help you launch yourself into your internship.

Safety and Security

Make sure to read the Guidelines Relating to the Safety and Security of International Placements under the Government of Canada's Youth Employment Strategy (YES).

Before leaving Canada, you must register on the Registration of Canadians Abroad (ROCA) website posted by Consular Affairs of Foreign Affairs Canada.

Your sponsoring organization should make you aware of the information in the Country Travel Reports produced by Consular Affairs. Its website offers up-to-date reports on safety, security, health concerns and visa requirements for countries around the world.

Forms

Please take the time to fill out the following forms.

Travel Reports and Waivers – Both you and your sponsoring organization must sign a travel waiver indicating that each party fully understands the contents of a specific Travel Report and are prepared to accept the risks involved.

Participant Information Form (PDF Format)

Interest Relief for International Interns with Student Loans – Here you can read pertinent information about your student loans.

Pre-Departure Survey – You must fill out the pre-departure survey before leaving Canada.

Self-Assessment Tool – CIDA IYIP interns have online access to the Young Professionals International Self-Assessment Tool of Foreign Affairs Canada (FAC). Interns are asked to select CIDA - IYIP on the drop down list of organizations.

The Skills-Assessment Tools are intended to encourage participants to focus on the skills they may need to develop/improve. In order to get a picture of their progress through participation in the program, interns should complete an assessment before, during and after their placements. This is not an evaluation or selection tool, it is intended to be a personal self-growth tool allowing interns to develop and implement their own skills development plan, as well as measure their improvement over the course of their internship placement.

Pre-departure training

To help prepare you to work most effectively in the new culture you are going to, CIDA has arranged with the Centre for Intercultural Learning (CIL) to provide pre-departure training as well as re-integration sessions on your return to Canada. Check with your organization to see if this training has been scheduled. These information sessions are very useful in helping you adapt and in giving you advice on issues such as security, health and culture in your host country.

Guide for CIDA Interns and Partner Organizations – This handy guide helps both parties plan and execute successful internships. The guide takes you through each phase of an internship, noting who is responsible for each action required and the target date for action.

The Shocking Truth about Culture Shock! - This guide to culture shock was prepared for United Nations Association of Canada Young Professionals International (YPI).
