Mrs. Hyppolite has found
employment thanks to a
road-upgrading project
supported by CIDA.
The workers are constructing
a road ramp.

A road-upgrading project supported by the Canadian International Development Agency is improving the road system for users of the Route de Carrefour. The labour-intensive project is designed to provide work for residents of the Port-au-Prince neighbourhood.

A 900 m road ramp known as Côte plage 18, part of the "rail route," is being constructed with adoquin stone, a type of cobblestone. It will help unclog local traffic and end the isolation of the neighbourhood by connecting it to Route nationale 2.

Not only is the project providing work for many labourers, it has also created opportunities for small business people, who have set up shop around the work site and increased their revenues.

The project also includes construction of gutters, installation of utilities such as water and electricity, and installation of traffic signal systems.
