At CIDA, a global issue is defined as an international development challenge that is being addressed by CIDA on behalf of Canada.

Global issues reflect CIDA program and project activities and our role as a committed player within a broader international community.

Global issues in this context flow from the policy suite that shapes our current work.

In the broadest sense, programming is concentrated in five sectors which directly relate to achieving the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs)—a unique approach to achieiving sustainable development built around a partnership of the global community. These sectors, along with a crosscutting theme of gender equality are:
