Two thousand area students and teachers got the information, got connected and plan to make a difference!

The Honourable Paddy Torsney, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister for International Cooperation and Craig Kielburger, founder of the international organization Free the Children teamed up on Thursday, February 10, 2005, at the Ottawa Congress Centre to inspire more than 2000 students from the National Capital Region to take action against poverty and do their part to make a difference in the world. "A celebration: Youth Leadership in Canada and Around the World" also featured special presentations by Max Keeping, community leader and popular newscaster for CJOH-TV plus performances by high school students from the region. Ms. Torsney encouraged students to get involved: “Youth like you—boys and girls, and young women and men—in Canada and around the globe can change the world for the better. The time to start is now, and the place to start is right here at home. The world needs your commitment, energy, and ideas”. She also took the opportunity to launch a new initiative, the CIDA-sponsored Global Citizenship Award. This event was presented by Child and Youth Friendly Ottawa (CAYFO) in partnership with CIDA.
