Afghan man in front of house in ruins
© Pedram Pirnia
Abdul looks forward to seeing his eight children every night after work. Twenty years of fighting left him with terrible memories, including the brutal deaths of loved ones. He entered the DDR program to train as a teacher, and he now works in that profession. “I will have the chance to influence the lives of the future generations,” he says, “and that is very rewarding for me.”

He has a message for groups and individuals who still bear arms: ‘‘It’s time to end fighting of brothers against brothers. All Afghans should put down their weapons and take part in the reconstruction of the country. Afghanistan needs the help of everyone today.’’
