Consumers and Debit Cards
Canadian Code of Practice for Consumer Debit Card Services

The Canadian Code of Practice for Consumer Debit Card Services was developed in 1992 and was revised in 1996. In January 2002, a guide to the interpretation of Section 5, Liability for Loss, was agreed to and added as Appendix A, by the Electronic Funds Transfer Working Group - a group made up of representatives from consumer organizations, financial institutions, retailers and federal and provincial governments.

The code was further revised in 2004 to clarify the procedures for addressing unauthorized transactions and other transaction problems.
