William G. Knight is the first Commissioner of the Financial Consumer Agency of Canada (FCAC). He was appointed on
November 1, 2001 to a five-year term with FCAC. As Commissioner, Mr. Knight examines matters relating to federal
consumer protection laws and reports to Parliament through the Minister of Finance.
Mr. Knight is an ex officio member of the Board of Directors of the Canada Deposit Insurance Corporation and a
member of the Board's Governance Committee. He is a member of the Financial Institutions Supervisory Committee
(FISC), chaired by the Superintendent of Financial Institutions, and of the Senior Advisory Committee (SAC),
chaired by the Deputy Minister of Finance.
From 1995 to 2001, Mr. Knight was President and CEO of Credit Union Central of Canada, where he undertook a number of
strategic initiatives to increase the national visibility and flexibility of the credit union system. He served as
chairman of the Board of Directors for the Credential Group and as chair of the Credit Union Institute of Canada.
Mr. Knight was also chair of Credit Union Central of Canada's CEO Committee and of the World Council of Credit
Unions' CEO Advisory Committee.
Prior to joining Credit Union Central of Canada, Mr. Knight held a number of senior management positions,
including principal secretary to political leaders at both the provincial and federal levels. He is a former
Member of Parliament for the riding of Assiniboia and has served on the House of Commons Standing Committee
on Finance. Mr. Knight served as a federally appointed Commissioner on the Royal Commission on Electoral
Reform and Party Finance.
Mr. Knight belongs to the Queen's University School of Policy Studies Advisory Council. He has also served
on the Board of Directors for the Public Policy Forum, the Canadian Payments Association and the Ontario
International Trade Corporation. He was a member of the CEO External Resources Group for the Ontario
Ministry of Education. Mr. Knight also served as chair of Ethical Fund Inc.
Mr. Knight has made presentations to international audiences on public affairs and financial services.
He has been a guest speaker at Harvard University, Oxford University and Queen's University. Mr. Knight
also attended the Directors' Consortium, a session on corporate governance held jointly by the Wharton
School (University of Pennsylvania), the University of Chicago Graduate School of Business and Stanford
Law School.
