Photo Health Card Security Enhancements

Why is the government improving the security of the Health Card?

These are security improvements to protect against tampered and counterfeit cards. This will protect your personal information. It helps to ensure that only the eligible card user can receive insured health services.

What are the changes to the Health Card?

A new holographic overlay covering the card includes :

  • smaller Ontario logos diagonally
  • larger Ontario logos horizontally

Other security enhancements can't be identified for security reasons.

Are you considering including biometric information on the new cards?

No.  Biometric information is not being considered at this time.

(Biometric information includes personal identity data such as fingerprints or iris scans).

When are the new cards available?

Ontarians will start to receive the new cards early in 2005.

Do people need to get this new Health Card now?

No. You will get the new Health Card when your current card expires or when a replacement card is needed.

Is there a cost for the new Health Card?

No.  There continues to be no cost for a Health Card.

Many Ontarians still have a red and white Health Card. Is the Ministry planning to replace them with the new photo Health Cards?

If you have a red and white Health Card you can re-register for a new photo Health Card.

You need to register for the new photo Health Card if your red and white Health Card is lost, stolen or damaged.
