Canada - Chile Free Trade Agreement (CCFTA)

The bilateral Canada-Chile Free Trade Agreement, which came into force on July 5, 1997, provides for duty-free access for 75% of total Canadian exports to Chile. It gives Canadian exporters an advantage over competitors from the U.S., European Union and Asia. The Agreement, which covers trade in goods and services, investment and a dispute settlement mechanism, is complemented by two side agreements on environment and labour.

Under the CCFTA, access for most agri-food products is duty-free immediately or will be within 5 to 10 years, with the exceptions of milling wheat, sugar and beef for which tariff phase-out periods are longer (17, 16 and 15 years, respectively). Between April 15th and November 15th (Canada's shipping period), durum wheat enjoys duty-free access to Chile. Most horticultural products enter Chile duty-free immediately.

The CCFTA provided immediate duty-free access for specific quantities of pork, canola oil, and beef while over-quota tariffs on these products are being phased-out over 10 to 15 years. Supply- managed dairy, poultry and eggs products are excluded from tariff elimination and Canada retains its over-quota tariffs for these products while Chile retains its tariffs for the same commodities.
