Nova Scotia Youth Conservation Corps - Regular Summer Program

Nova Scotia Department of Environment & Labour

Last Verified: 2006-05-08

The Nova Scotia Youth Conservation Corps Regular Summer Program (NSYCC) provides opportunities for Nova Scotian youth between the ages of 17 and 24 to receive training and work experience in the environmental field, while providing services to communities to address their environmental needs through enhancement projects.

Eligibility Criteria

Project proponents include:

  • community groups
  • businesses
  • government agencies
  • industries
  • non-governmental organization

Summary

Projects will be carried out across Nova Scotia for a nine week period, between July and August. Each project involves a team of two to four youth.

The NSYCC seeks project proposals which relate to one or a combination of specific themes. Themes for 2006 include: watershed management, waste resource management, pollution prevention, environmental education and interpretation, and climate change/air quality. Projects are all required to include a public awareness component.

Labour and expenses: The NSYCC provides three quarters of the cost of labour, up to $100 for material and supplies, and $50 for travel expenses. The community partner (proponent) is required to provide one quarter of the cost of labour (based on $8.50/hr/person, 35hr/week) and any other expenses exceeding the $150 provided by the NSYCC.

The NSYCC also provides the administration, recruiting, and payroll for the crew workers, as well as training in environmental issues, first aid, occupational health & safety, and WHMIS. Any other required training is the responsibility of the community partner. Community partners are expected to participate in the interview process for project crews.

For additional information, or to obtain an application form, please contact the NSYCC Coordinator.
