Metis Employment & Training of Saskatchewan Inc. (METSI)

In partnership with Human Resource Development Canada, the goal of The Metis Employment & Training of Saskatchewan Inc. (METSI) is to increase the skill level and participation rates of Métis individuals in the work place.

Summary

How will they achieve this?

  • increase Métis employment through grass roots initiatives to assist with job creation and retention
  • improve employer counseling and awareness of quantity and quality of the Métis labour force
  • develop and create more entrepreneurship among and within Métis communities and individuals as a career alternative
  • maintain a database of skilled labour that can be accessed by employers for vacant positions

Currently METSI offers three programs to assist Métis clients as listed below:

Individual Sponsorship Program
This program is designed to assist Métis clients obtain the skills required to advance their present position or obtain quality employment in their chosen field through further education and training.  Skills training may be purchased from provincially-accredited Institutes or Private Vocational Schools.  Costs that may be covered include, but are not limited to:  tuition, books, training allowance, and student travel.

Wage Subsidy Program
This program is designed to assist Métis individuals enter or return to the workforce by participating in a practical work experience.  It provides employers with a wage subsidy to hire Métis individuals for full time employment  to provide marketable skills and experience that will likely lead to long-term employment.  They will reimburse up to $8/hour for a maximum of 36 weeks.

Student Work Experience
This program offers a wage subsidy for employers hiring Métis clients during the year.  The duration of the program may be 4 - 18 weeks and is intended to provide clients with work experience and developmental learning in their chosen fields.  Rates of reimbursement vary according to the sector of employer (private, non-profit, public).  Clients must be returning to school or attending school at the end of this program in order to qualify.
