Ministry of Training Colleges and Universities - MTCU

Last Verified: 2006-06-09

The Youth Opportunities Ontario strategy has several components (including Job Connect, the Summer Jobs Service and the Ontario Youth Apprenticeship Program) that can help employers to hire and train youth.

Eligibility Criteria

Ontario businesses

Summary

Job Connect
Employers who operate a business in Ontario, who are looking to hire staff, are ready to provide on-the-job training and/or who are seeking people who want to work, may benefit from Job Connect.  Employers may be able to reduce costs associated with training a new employee.  Job Connect will register job vacancies and help employers find the right person for the job.

On-the-Job Training job placement participants must be at least 16 years of age, out of school, out of work, not currently in a training program and not receiving Employment Insurance

Summer Jobs Service
Employers (including farm businesses), community organizations, and not-for-profit groups may receive a $2.00/hour as an incentive to hire students for jobs.  Placements can last up to 16 weeks beginning in April and ending by September 30.

Employees must be between the ages of 15 and 24 (up to 29 years for a person with a disability), not currently working for the employer applying for the hiring incentive (the exception being students whose part-time jobs will be increased to full-time while participating in the Summer Jobs Service), planning to return to school in the fall.

Ontario Youth Apprenticeship Program
Employers in the skilled trades who are able to provide structured training and supervision can be matched with an OYAP cooperative education student.  Students may or may not register as an apprentice while enrolled in OYAP.  Participants are enrolled in school while pursuing formal apprenticeship training.  This is an excellent opportunity for employers expanding their workforce to recruit new apprentices.  Students participating in OYAP are at least 16 years old and in grade 11 and 12.
