Packing your Carry-on Baggage

Wondering what you can pack in your carry on?

  • Camera film?
  • Medication?
  • Jewellery?
  • Sports and/or hunting equipment?
  • Any sharp and/or pointed object?
  • Toy weapons?
  • Lighters?

Efficiently packing your carry-on baggage will help speed up the process at the pre-board screening (PBS) checkpoint. Certain items are not permitted beyond the PBS checkpoint. If you have any doubts about an item, place it in your checked baggage, unless otherwise indicated in the Permitted and Non-Permitted Items list.

Tips for packing your carry-on baggage:

  • Do not pack
    • Lighters
    • Sharp and/or pointed objects
  • Check the Permitted and Non-Permitted Items list
    • Ensure you have not packed a prohibited item;
  • Place personal items (i.e. toothbrush) in clear plastic bags;
  • It is recommended that medication be placed in your carry-on baggage.
    • Please ensure that it is properly labelled (professionally printed label identifying the medication or a manufacturers name or pharmaceutical label);
  • Pack film in carry-on baggage.
    • The equipment used at pre-board screening (PBS) areas will not damage film under 800 ISO/ASA. However, multiple exposures (more than 5 times) of the same roll of film to PBS x-ray inspection may cause damage.
    • Most amateur photographers use film in the 100-400 ISO/ASA range. Specialty film is defined as film with an ASA/ISO 800 or higher and typically used by professionals. If passengers are concerned about their film, once they have placed it in their carry-on baggage, they may request a hand search at the PBS area. Please note that physical search of films will be carried when circumstances permit;
  • Do not wrap gifts. Their contents may need to be inspected.
  • Pack only what you need for the duration of the flight
  • Toy weapons are not permitted in carry-on baggage. Pack them in your checked baggage.
  • Electronic devices (laptops, PDA's, cameras) require removal of bags for special screening. Preparing for this will increase the speed of screening.
